HCK is looking to the future |
We are very excited to announce that the development of the HCK campus continues this summer with the addition of a new multi-purpose outdoor surface delivering three new tennis courts and two outdoor basketball courts.
Tennis is a central part of the summer sports programme here in the school. We want all our girls to play tennis, as it is a social sport that you can play for life. We therefore want to encourage as many of our girls to play as possible, and we also want to help our very talented players to compete at the highest school level. This year HCK won the Leinster Junior A Tennis League and the Leinster Minor A Tennis League!
Our new tennis courts will be surfaced in porous acrylic and be finished in two tone green. This surface type provides excellent drainage so is particularily suitable for the Irish climate. It offers a medium-paced game, with predictable bounce and good grip, suitable for all skill levels, and it maintains consistent speed and bounce over time. It has a slight cushioning compared to harder surfaces which reduces joint impact and fatigue and also reduces the risk of slipping in damp conditions due to improved water drainage. Compared to natural surfaces (like clay or grass), porous acrylic requires less frequent upkeep and it is a cost-effective option that balances performance, weather resilience, and longevity. We hope it will also be enjoyed by our students for years to come, engendering pride in their school and encouraging them to get involved and give of their best.
We will also use the area, which is located where the old tennis courts are, for two basketball courts. We have over 150 basketballers in HCK and 13 teams from Minor to Senior. It has a huge team game here in the school. The basketball lines will be painted in yellow and the nets will be repositioned at the fence so as not to impede the playing of tennis.
The construction of this surface will begin following the state examinations and will be complete by August 12, 2025. As with all our development projects here in the school it is the generosity of our community, parents, past parents, grandparents and alumnae, that provides opportunities and top facilities to all our students and for this we are deeply grateful.
